Another Frog Finally Poses

I say another because I have a fair number of frog images and pictures around the place. I love frogs. They say they are a sign of a healthy environment. So I was pleased when we moved into our new place that we have frogs here as well. While not as many as Far North Queensland, I am sure that every downpipe has one in it!

So I was really pleased when I found this one sitting on the bird feeder where I could get a decent shot of him. I think I took about 10 goes to get one that was good (well good enough to post on flickr).

I have been following them around for ages but they are usually not locatable or are high up on something where a photo would be difficult. In my tracking I have often seen one that jumps from the roof to the grass on his nightly outing. I have never seen a frog jump off something so high willingly! I think this is the same one. Kate is yet to see it, she always hears me say – “there it goes again and you missed it!”.

There is a larger size on flickr, but remember this work is licenced under creative commons.

Picture a Year Since 1976

This page shows  a great deal of foresight, persistence and patience. Things like this are hard to stick to and if you miss but one the whole project is ruined. The Goldburg family from Argentina have photographed themselves every year on the 17th of June since 1976.

The timeline and pictures are presented in an unusual way. Only so much as you would think that time is linear and therefore a straight line. But when you have a closer look it makes sense. Diego and Susy started off as a couple, then as they had children they were added to the yearly photo shoot. Being a vertical representation means that each individual is in the same spot each year. You can scroll down the page to see how they have changed.

While simple this project provides some great information for the family and those that view it. Such as the ages of their children and how many years apart they are. Sure you have to work that out but the site is really for themselves and I am sure they know. I wonder what the children think of this wonderful legacy that their parents have created for them. It reminded me of the people that have taken a photo of themselves every day for a year or for six years in this example and made a video of it.

These type of projects inspire us and we appreciate them greatly. Usually because with the best intentions we would probably start one and fail. The main reason I have not started mine. Top effort and deserves recognition. I enjoyed the site.

Now if those pictures could talk, imagine the stories they could tell.

Dirty Hack

I don’t normally cross post on Rooster’s Rail and The Global Geek Podcast Blog, but I think this story is worthy for both audiences. But I will change it a bit here to suit. There is one part that you will find amusing.

So there we were Knightwise and myself recording episode #025 of The Global Geek Podcast. We record the show over Skype as he is in Belgium and I am in Australia. Everything was going very well and we were into the seventh Tech News Story and… nothing. The whole house was plunged into darkness, we lost power here at home.

I am thinking that I don’t know how long I have lost the power for, I had better find a way to contact Knightwise and let him know what was going on. Think Rooster think! Ah got it, ring his mobile… Damn it, his mobile number is on the computer which at this point in time is unserviceable due to lack of juice.

So I ring my brother on my mobile phone, the home phone runs on power so that was out as well. James dude, do me a favour and ring Knightwise on Skype and let him know that I have lost power. Lucky I remembered Knightwise’s Skype id as James had to add him to his contact list. Enter the dirty hack:

Dirty Phone Hack

That does not look pretty and believe me the sound was worse. So the hand you see is my brother’s (AKA: Air Bridge). The phone you see is his cordless home phone, it is on “speaker”. The Skype call that you might be able to see on the screen is a call from James’ computer to Knightwise. Contact with Knightwise established by one very dirty hack. Communicating was not too bad we could talk to each other but occasionally the Air Bridge had to decode what was said. Plus, I did not have to pay for a mobile phone call to Belgium (Woot!).

To top it all off we lost the recording.

Publicity is Nice

.net Magazine PictureI woke this morning to some great news that The Global Geek Podcast has been featured in prominent U.K magazine “.net”.

The podcast is listed with 2 others. But the great thing is that to be listed with popular podcasts like Diggnation is tops! I am not sure if the magazine comes out in other countries with the same format, but if you live in the UK have a look at page 20.

The picture that appears here is a link to a full sized image click for full size. My thanks to Jack for sending it in. Sorry that it is not better quality but it is a photo of the magazine. Perhaps Jack should be entered into our +1000 competition?

Sebastian was very much a part of the growth of the podcast up to this point and I thank him for the support that he has given.

Updated “About” Page

Rooster Image EmailJust to let everyone know that I have updated my “about” page and I like it better.

I have been under a pit of pressure to have a go at changing my about page. Admittedly the previous iteration was thrown together not long after coming to WordPress. A lot has happened since then so I decided to update it.

I have been blogging for about a year now and so that was a bit of motivation for me to change a few things. I guess it also answers a few questions that people might have about me. I have also included links to other things that I do or are associated with.

I think the page is a little more rounded now and I think it reflects how I feel about blogging and what I am doing and what I am trying to accomplish. I think the “feel” thing is important, because unless you are passionate about something then it isn’t going to be as effective as if you were. I am by nature a passionate person and believe in both my ideas and opinions. Ask anyone that I have had an argument with! I can argue for something I know is wrong and have the other person believing it. I am not sure that is a good thing but it does reflect the passion of the person.

Enjoy the new page and for new visitors have a look and learn more about The Rooster. A nick that doesn’t seem to be that popular on the Internet and by which I am becoming known. Not sure that’s a good thing either. But it kind-of fits and I like it. So call me Dave or The Rooster and drop a comment here and there, bloggers love it and it gives them purpose.
